One for the Road Screened At Cameo Cinema, EdinburghBy Brian Robinson Slouch Potato's first short film, One for the Road (produced in conjunction with Edinburgh Mediabase) premiered at the Cameo Cinema in Edinburgh on Monday 4th November as part of Edinburgh Mediabase's monthly Blue Room event. One for the Road was the winner of the Edinburgh Mediabase "Forty 8ight Hours" film competition in October. The competition is held at each Blue Room event, at which every audience member is given the opportunity to submit an idea for a short film based on a 'brief' set by Mediabase. The winning entry is chosen at the end of the night, and the winner is given 24 hours equipment hire and 24 hours editing time free of charge. The resulting film must be shot and edited within those 48 hours. One for the Road was the winner of October's 'Buffy brief', which required a story with lots of vampiric fun and gore. It is a tale of two vampires who meet up after fifty years and spend the night at a party, catching up with old times and bragging about how much blood they've drunk and in the most violent manner, but to their eventual cost. In their website introduction to One for the Road, Mediabase warned the audience that night to "expect the unexpected". The screening went down a treat, and despite Mediabase's warning, none of the audience seemed to be expecting its darkly comedic slapstick. Every gag got a laugh, every victim's demise was met with an "Eugh!" and at the end, there was a reassuringly spontaneous round of applause. Even some of the cast and crew members didn't expect what they saw. Well, it was nearly Halloween, after all… The event was co-hosted by Marc De Launay (director of Channel Four's Vidz and Mediabase's The Last Noel – which was also written by Brian Robinson) and editor Mark Jenkins, who led an audience Q&A session with the filmmakers at the end of each slot. Seven films were shown in total, the quality of which was invariably high, with Sylvester (dir Kevin Molony) deservedly winning the audience vote for best film of the night.
